Black Girls in Magazines: Chanel, Jourdan, Sessilee &

I feel a little ambivalent about this cover. Does anyone remember the controversy i-D was under with that sambo-ish editorial that was sponsored by American Apparel in 2007?

Just saying. At any rate, I do like the long gloves though.

  1. I love this cover! I think we have a long way to go, but I think these are steps in the right direction. Clearly all four girls are stunning and photograph amazingly! Hopefully more photographers and designers see this and we can get to a place where Black models are more fairly represented in fashion mags. We should already be there in 2009, but we have to start somewhere. And regarding that ridiculously racist fashion spread with the American Apparel clothing, I don’t think AA sponsored the editorial. They printed a statement that said it was their clothing but totally i-D’s concept.

  2. Aulelia,

You know it bugs me that mags make a big deal out of putting Black women on the covers but when you open the mag there are almost no Black women in the ads.
