I cannot even begin to explain how obsessed I am with Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and the sequel, Through the Looking Glass.
And I am not alone. Orville has love for the Carrollian work too.
In many ways, it is an example of a literary work that is nearly perfect. Carroll’s idiosyncratic ideas have come to lasting impacts like his creations of Tweedledee and Tweedledum and the Mad Hatter. I have read the books and watched the Disney version so I am definitely piqued to see what Tim Burton has in mind.
I would just like to also say that while I am excited about the film, I don’t want it to fall into a stereotypical portrayal of the man on drugs when he wrote it thing. That is 100% bullshit. The story came from a brilliant mind. Carroll was a mathematician so he clearly had brains.
The 2010 film will be an amalgamation of both Alice books.
According to imdb, the casting is as follows for now:
- Mad Hatter – Johnny Depp
- The White Queen – Anne Hathaway
- Michael Sheen – The Cheshire Cat
- Matt Lucas – Tweedledee/Tweedledum
- Christopher Lee
- Alan Rickman – Caterpillar
I’m turning into a bit of an Anne Hathaway stan. She has this cool, quirky demeanour to her. Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter will be interesting. I think he can pull it off but I am sure it will probably be the most difficult piece of work he ever has to do because it is a role that in many ways has been immortalised in the Disney version.
So far, I think the casting list looks alright. Naturally taking a beast like AiW is not going to be a joke because it is a classic piece of literature AND it has a massive cult following so whoever gets chosen to be in the film will be criticised anyway.
According to the linked article above, the film will….
…be presented in 3D using a mix of live action and performance capture CGI.
Again, it sounds so hard to call. All I know is I am really excited and 2010 is months and months away! I wonder whether Lewis Carroll knew what a phenomenon his classic books would be when he wrote them in the late 19th century. I mean, this story is 144 years old – just phenomenal to think that it is still as quirky and original as it was then as it is today.
Anyhoo, I will be updating the blog with news and pix as the come so stay tuned so I apologise in advance to any non-Alice reading Charcoal readers, but I just love this book so much. My obsession with AiW runs so deep that basically when I get my Balinese cat this year, because I want one, I am stuck between calling the cat I get Dinah or Beyonce. That’s how you know I am an Alice stan!
[EDIT: I have seen pictures of Alice! I don’t want them to post them here b/c I am not feeling brave but they are on the imdb pages. Click here and scroll to the bottom of the FAQ!]
