  1. @Aisha, I am going to try and catch an episode of this when Tyra was feisty to them.

I think one reason I have always liked Tyra is because she is pro-black and I like that she has tried to show some sort of unity.

“Nappy” — that word just makes me shudder!

  2. @Aulelia
Yes, Tyra just had a show recently regarding skin color, looking mixed, people hating their race, etc. It was just people discussing their problems, but there was no psychologist on the show to help them sort out their feelings. In the beginning she used to try to help people by having experts on the show. Now, I feel like she is just exploiting them.

“Nappy” here in the U.S. is a negative term for tightly curled, kinky hair textures. It means dirty, matted, ugly and unmanageable. It seems that some natural women are trying to reclaim the word by using it on themselves, but it still isn’t very popular. I usually say “natural” or “kinky” or “Afro-textured.” I don’t like the word nappy, but I don’t hate it as much as I used to.

  3. @Aisha, lol Tyra knows how to talk that’s for sure.

If thats the case about the light/dark skin thing, she needs to rectify that.

I hate when people say ”nappy”. I don’t get why anyone uses that word. It’s odd to me but perhaps it has a different meaning in North America.

  4. I used to love Tyra, but now my opinion of her is not as high as before. Maybe I’m just tired of seeing her and hearing her talk about herself, lol.

The thing that I don’t like with her show is that she brings up issues like light skinned/dark skinned, but she doesn’t have any experts on her show to offer a professional opinion. There is never any resolution or suggestions for change.

As for natural hair, I’ve seen a few clips where she talks about it. She says her hair is “nappy.” Tyra admits that she doesn’t think she would have made it as far in her career with natural hair. I think she has serious issues with accepting her natural hair as a Black woman, which is why she is always in those wigs.

  5. I like because she’s herself 24/7 and isn’t afraid to let anyone know it.

-Though I wish she had spoken out more about Natural hair, instead of glancing over it. (I’m referring to a Tyra Show Episode)

  6. Why don’t you like her using ”people of colour”, may I ask?

I love her because she is down and she represents. I think she has set the bar high for black women and I am glad for that.

  7. I like the way Tyra keeps on bringing up the issues of race, such as “dark skin vs. light skin”. She said herself that she made sure that for the ANTM they have girls who are dark skinned, have kinky and/or short hair, wide nose, full lips, etc.
I do wonder though how her natural hair texture and color look like. She brought up the colorism issue several times in her show, but I don’t remember her really talking about the image of the nappy hair.
I don’t really like the way she uses the term “people of color” either, but all in all, I like her a lot.
