Tape me: Video Phone is a gut song. When I was listening to the album for the 1st time, I didn’t like it at all. The beat was going at the speed of the light.
Then, it knocked me in the gut as I started to listen to it more.
I started to dance around Single-Ladies style to Video Phone, miming to Beyonce’s attitude laced lyrics.
You want me naked?: Video Phone is Beyonce’s most sexually provocative song I have ever heard.
I thought Kitty Kat on B’Day was extremely provocative, considering her sweet nature as she purred: “Your sex ain’t all that” and “that includes my sweet little nookie too”.
Video Phone is a sonic gyration of a woman who sounds sexually liberated, who wants to put on a ’show’ for her man.
The faux noises in the background give the song this sheen of female sexuality that is proud, almost flagrant.
I do think there is this idea that female sexuality is supposed to be supressed, pushed down. Video Phone seems to be asking or proclaiming that assertive females should stamp their sexual prerogative all over their man.
Then again, we could argue that Video Phone parades the idea that a woman is a float, for male observers to gawk at on their video mobiles.
I think the concept of a coquettish Betty Boop in your face sexuality is cute. Video Phone has that sexiness squeezed within its’ dancehall infused beats. It may get some conservative feminists confused, but I think its’ aim is in the right place: when assertiveness is consensual, it is powerful.
Them hustlers keep on talking!
The song, “Video Phone” is a very well thought of, and creative song. I cant say i dont like the beat and Beyonce is a talented and blessed individual. But let me ask you this. If for example, say someone else came out with the same exact song, would that female be slutty and a whore, or if she was Beyonce, would it be ok? And she isnt talking to just one man. Why the hell would she want to make a dude a star if he already got money, like the way she said in DIVA? I honestly think BECAUSE it is Beyonce, its cool in societys eyes. Let the average female sing about that and it becomes tacky.
Hi DyAnnah, Thanks for commenting and welcome to the blog.
Even if Bee didn’t sing VP, I don’t think it is a slutty song. If a man and a woman are in a consensual relationship where they are sexually active, there is nothing wrong with acting out one’s fantasies and being vocal about it.
If anything, I think VP sounds empowering. It is a strong woman who is asserting her strength to the man. It’s like the queen of the chess game checkmating.
