“I would love to work for you!”: Discussing internship hunting

NB: I should be focusing on my dissertation but I need a break! Brace yourself for a rambling work entry!

I think anyone who wants to be an intern whether it is a media company, bank or whatever knows what it feels like to write a cover letter or what I call a please-give-me-a-job-letter, or what I also label as a begging letter/begging e-mail.

Here are a few stats of places I have applied for work experience in the past 3 weeks for an autumn/winter work placement. [I really need to apply for more but I am just so shattered lol].

Out of 6 places that I wrote CVs and begging letters for all of, here are the following statistics that I have assembled:

  • Only 1 publication wrote back to me. I was so happy and terrified to see the e-mail in my inbox. It wasn’t encouraging but at least it was not an out and out rejection. They said they may remember me. I am happy that the woman took time to at least write back though! Most publications don’t even write back! This publication, however, is very prestigious in the entertainment industry however so lol, I felt happy that they at least took time to write back! [Okay, I am coming off cloud 9 because they still blanked me]
  • 3 applications were responses to advertisements
  • 3 applications were speculative. Now, I know in CV speak, this is very dangerous but I am just trying to cover all angles. Last year, I got a response from a well known newspaper from writing a ‘cold’ begging letter for an internship. The lady who interviewed me was lovely. Ultimately, I could not do it but I think writing for work experience ‘coldly’, ie, not knowing names, does at least show some sort of initiative.
  • 2 of the places will probably never write back lol. They are too famous.
  • 52pence! That is the cost of sending a CV and begging letter in an A4 format envelope by bloody Royal Mail! I have spent a few 52p’s trying to get work experience.

I think finding work experience/internships is not a joke. Do people like to receive e-mails or letters ? All I know is I just need to keep trying. Does anyone have any internship experiences they want to paste in the comments ? Please feel free :)
