The Political Masculinity of City of God/Cidade de Deus

Preface: again, more spoilers!

Cidade de Deus/City of God was break-out Brazilian language film that my friend and I watched in addition to Imitation of Life (discussed in the post prior to this). The film is fantastic; I can’t sing its’ praises enough. What I found very engrossing about this film was the construction of masculinity, especially through Rocket and Lil Ze.

Yesterday night, a friend of mine and I watched a double bill of movies. First we watched the criticially acclaimed City of God, a film that we had both seen before a while ago. Then we watched Imitation of Life.
