This snake may look harmless and perhaps it is. But certain snakes, masquerading as men, definitely aren’t! I was asked what other islands I visited while in the French West Indies – I went to St Lucia and Barbados. Both islands were gorgeous but very different too. We took the boat from Fort-de-France to Castries – the route looks like this:

As we sat down waiting to be taken onto the boat, I heard this hissing sound. It went on and on and on. I didn’t want to be bate and try and see who it was so I just ignored it. The hissing continues and gradually it began to grate on my nerves. I looked up to see St Lucian guy, staring at me and continuing his hissing, the spit decorating his mouth. He asked me to get the attention of my friend Jen. I told him that if he wants to talk to her, do not hiss at her. She is a human being and if he just spoke in a friendly manner and showed some *respect*, that would be polite and he would see if she would respond or not. He just nodded and his friend was sitting there quietly. 2 minutes later, he resumed his hissing which I am sure is how he snags girls but I have to say, I have not come across men like that. ever. I know that some men do not care about how they go about getting girls but come on, hissing at a girl?? You cannot be serious!

This incident had me thinking about men a great deal. Women might as well still be pedestals because some men just have not moved on at all. Why hiss at her? It is as if she is his pet and he is making animal noises to her or something. Yet, besides silly men like that, the trip was great fun. St Lucia was a heady mix of plantain, yams, loud music, lush almost rainforest like terrain and a bustling and raw capital in the form of Castries. And no snakes in sight!

P/S – Jermaine Jackson update: He seems to be doing well! He comes across good and down-2-earth on the camera. I am pleasantly surprised by him because he has been quiet but is mixing well and cheery. It is eviction night today so bonne chance Monsieur Jackson!

  • exactly, it is so juvenile but as usual men think that because they have the so-called upper hand that they can do whatever they want. *rolls eyes*. it is really annoying! today for example, i was walking to the supermarket, cd player listening as usual and some men from across the road were laughing and staring at me. i don’t want to be paranoid but it is like get a life and stay in your house — what is the point standing in outside a door that is ajar?

  • I have never understood that whole hissing thing. I think that is some universal “I find you attractive” signal. Even if that is the case, it’s disrespectful no matter what. I wish more men would just learn decent conversation skills and speak to the woman rather than hiss at her. So juvenile!

And I’m glad Jermaine is coming out of his shell and showing that he does know how to relate to people other than his own family.
